Approaches to Counselling/Therapy
Counselling - Therapy Modalities
By approaches to counselling, we mean the style of counselling that is used. There are many theories and approaches to counselling and your Rata counsellor will have trained in at least one of the following modalities.
CBT - Cognitive Behavourial Therapy
Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a short term, goal oriented form of therapy. It is based on the concept that emotions, thoughts, feelings and behaviour are closely related. It is therefore possible for people to overcome emotional problems and reduce unhelpful behaviours by helping them change the way they think.
EFT - Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples
EFT is a structured approach to therapy for couples whose relationships are distressed. It helps couples strengthen their attachment bonds and revive the feelings that initially brought them together so they feel reconnected, safe, secure and valued in their relationship.
Jungian Approach
This approach is based on the principle that the client’s strengths will provide the foundation for building a more satisfying, meaningful life. By exploring and integrating information from your unconscious into your conscious experience and by paying attention to dreams, fantasies and relationships, clients discover how they can grow and create positive change in their lives.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy is an approach that involves:
- Working respectfully along side people;
- Valuing peoples own knowledge about their lives;
- Identifying peoples strengths, resources, abilities and postive experiences;
- Helping people separate from the problem story,and discover an alternative story to guide their lives in a preferred direction.
Person Centred Counselling
This approach takes the view that every person has the internal resources they need for growth and to fully develop their potential for life. Person-centred counselling aims to provide three core conditions; unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence to help that growth and potential to occur.
Solution Focused Therapy
Solution Focused Therapy is based on the belief that the client is the best expert on what it takes to change his or her life. It helps people change by developing a detailed picture of what life would be like without their problems and identifying solutions that will help them get there. Often these solutions are already present in people’s lives, so by doing more of the things that are working (and less of the things that are not); Solution Focused Therapy helps clients form the basis for ongoing, positive change.
TA – Transactional Analysis
TA is a set of practical conceptual tools for personal growth and change. It helps clients sort out thoughts and behaviours that result in personal difficulties and can be very useful for people who want to develop new options and outcomes for difficult situations that happen repeatedly.
